"I don't get it. Please teach me in the way that I learn best." The respectful pleas of an eight-year old asking his teachers to give him the processes and tools to maneuver the schoolhouse environment.. "I want to play in the WNBA. I love basketball and that is my goal," the fifth grader announced to her teachers. We knew that wasn't going to happen if she didn't meet eligibility requirements in high school, so our job was to forge the pathway for her success. This book presents several ideas that came together to create a school environment where a universal design for learning showed every child they mattered, where every child could experience success, and where every child felt they belonged. Our staff journey through years of professional development focused on those ideas. There are themes throughout this book that nurtured this differentiated environment: A commitment to students, sharing the decisions and the work, knowing your craft, and the professional willingness to learn new processes and blend old approaches. As we strengthen the relationship between theory and practice, between teaching and learning, we seek to produce capable, confident 21 century problem-solvers.
