Sick with tuberculosis, contracted during her nursing, Mary Stewart travelled to New Zealand in 1881 for a cure and to further her nursing career. She had strength of character and spirit even though her body was frail. She became the first Matron of Napier Hospital. Her story is one of adventure, love, joy, achievement and the struggle against old attitudes.
