This Critical edition" is an inside look at the Cleveland & Eastern Railway (C&E) system in which millions of riders used to get from Cleveland to Geauga County. Included are detailed maps and blueprints of the right-of-way along with the largest photo archive ever published of the line. The first edition of the Maple Leaf Route was the story of Everett & Moore's interurban that ran through the region between 1899 and 1925. It chronicled who, what, when and where things happened. This edition includes two other railroads that were connected and in business with the Cleveland & Eastern Railway. They were the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and the Nickel Plate Railroad. Maps and photos connect these legendary railroads. Readers will enjoy the "Tales on the trails" chapter which presents true stories from the past by some of Geauga County's Amish community whose grandparents worked and rode on the rails. Recent discoveries of items thought to be lost to history have been found and photographed, bringing the past back to life. Chardon became the rail capital east of Cleveland, and was known as a "Jerkwater" town. Geauga County forests play a major role in this book, as they, like large portions of America's forest lands were cut down to build our villages and maintain railroads. A detailed analysis can be found in the "Preserving Wooden Ties & Trestles" chapter. Bridges and trestles play a vital role in this edition and the "I didn't know that" chapter has several surprises. A great deal of information in this book was not known at the time of the first edition. This includes C&E employee names and photos of those who had long careers with the line, and then had prominent roles in new careers after the road was abandoned. An advertising chapter presents company ads where the Cleveland & Eastern bought their products ranging from interurban cars to light bulbs and miscellaneous items. It is fun to know where things came from and who made them. One thing is for sure, everything was Made in America!"--Page [4] of cover.
