Reworking Tourism explores how "economy" can be done differently in tourism and in the process, it reworks how tourism can deliver social and economic wellbeing in a changing world. It is increasingly clear that we need alternative models to help unlock and reposition tourism as something more than profit, jobs, and growth. In tourism, at least in the Global North, the exploration of alternative economic and political spaces has tended to be located at the margins of political and social discourses. The pressing need to re-engineer our dominant economic models and the growing backlash against extractive and exploitative forms of tourism typified by overtourism and collaborative economy platforms have fuelled anti-tourism activism, ignited a need to rethink the status quo, and to activate change. The Global South has much to teach the Global North about alternative economic models, different kinds of exchange and resilience. In response, this volume, drawing from communities in both North and South, provides case studies in which contributors explore the alternative economies of tourism, and in the process, rework how tourism can deliver social and economic wellbeing in a changing world. Topics discussed include diverse economies, Indigenous values (indigeneity), and sustainable, inclusive tourism. Exploring alternative models to help unlock and reposition tourism as something more than profit, jobs, and growth, Reworking Tourism will be of great interest to scholars of tourism and development, and tourism and economics. The chapters were originally published as a special issue of Tourism Planning & Development.
