This is the second book in a series, featuring a young Quaker boy and his family. Rufus and his grandmother, arrive in Bellingham Washington after an adventurous and difficult trip from Iowa in the Winter of nineteen forty five. His Grandfather and parents are still in Europe helping the victims of the war. He meet a knew friend who has recently moved from an interment camp in Iowa. They are joined by returning family andRufus learns about life outside of the isolated community he had lived in. The way that his family copes with injustices of the time, helps a bully and guides Rufus in his growth and understanding is instructive. It includes humor, culture and a child's perspective on what the adults around him have come to see as "just the way it is"
