He leaves him bloodied. But then the prison wardens pounce on him, leaving him unconscious. Soso wakes up in hospital, angry and sad. Madubula pays him a surprise visit. Soso tells him of the guilt he feels inside. And then Madubula breaks the news: he has contracted HIV/AIDS. He urges Soso to take revenge for him. Days later, Madubula dies in a hospital bed. Soso decides that the only way to redemption is to kill Choppe and assume the throne. He buys himself some more time to make a knife. Soso is released from hospital. He enters the cell. He has calculated it in his head. But his attempt to kill Chopper is hindered by his lieutenants. The only way to end this, Chopper proposes a duel , barbaric , according to the gang's number lore. The duel commences, suddenly Chopper has the knife. He toys with him. Madubula's face in a hospital bed resurfaces. He digs deeper, and manages to overpower Chopper. He plunges the knife in the neck, leaving him lifeless. Montie is livid, he suspects him, but no one is talking. Soso assumes the position of being a gang leader. He exercises his authority, and gains a reputation for being not just ruthless, but a monster. Soso knows that he has kissed his parole review goodbye when Montie’s testimony indicates that no programs could rehabilitate him. He gets a long awaited visit from his old friend, Duke, who proposes drug trafficking. But in order for it to be administered without any hindrances, Soso takes out the gang leader of the 28s, who controls half of the entire prison drug trafficking. His cell receives a new young inmate. He notices a familiar pattern with the late Madubula. The young inmate is naive and cocky. Hence he rebukes him. But small acts of kindness from the young inmate, begins to soften him up. Soso receives an unexpected visitor: It is Sandy, his long lost sweetheart. She breaks the news that his mother had stroke, and later died in hospital. She has something more to say, but is tongue-tide. Soso’s plan for killing the 28 gang leader has backfired; the 28s want revenge. Soso must issue a directive to attack, but has lost the will to live. As they pounce on him, his guilt about the death of his father; the death of his childhood friend, Boyi; the death of Madubula; the passing of his mother...he finally accepts responsibility. -- Publisher's description.
