Levi Monk sits with the dying. Handed a deathbed letter by one of his clients, Eric, Levi reluctantly agrees to hand-deliver it unaware the letter has been impregnated with the same deadly spores that are killing Eric. Unless both Levi and the addressee, Sara (Eric's former lover), follow the instructions within it to recover a relic they, along with Sara's child, will all be dead within four months. The relic not only contains the antidote to the deadly spores but also purportedly has the power to re-generate life. Eric's life. Co-ordinating the quest is Hiro, Levi's metaphysical mentor, whom Eric has also infected. Thus co-opted Hiro has agreed to preserve Eric's remains after his death and administer an ancient psychotropic drug to Levi and Sara that will bind them to a common alternate reality experience which will lead them to discover the location of the relic.The drug sends Levi and Sara into an alternate medieval world. A world so inextricably linked with their own that death or injury in one is replicated in both. With no memory of each other, or any life apart from the rich layers of the medieval court the two are nevertheless thrust together, Levi, as a disaffected knight and Sara, widow of the former king. Levi is conscripted to be Sara's bodyguard. Following a threat on the life of Sara's daughter (heir to the kingdom) she convinces him to help her and the child escape. Together they journey to the high country of Sara's birth where they uncover a map to an ancient relic just before the effects of the drug wear off. Awakening in the real world they begin the perilous journey to recover the relic unaware that Eric's criminal associates will do anything to stop them.
