My Childhood, Learning to Keep The White Space: My autobiography is my childhood story. At 4, my baby sister was born with a life-threatening condition. Because of conversations, I overheard and misunderstood I believed it was my fault she was ill. I believed anyone that came close to me might become ill themselves. I was angry, I was afraid and I did not want to stay alive. My behavior was ok only when I was left to my drawing with a pad of drawing paper and a pencil my Aunt Lillian and Uncle Bill had given me. My teachers preferred I drew in school rather than cause the disruption's my behavior caused. At 10 years old, in spite of my parents efforts, I had not learned to read. Trips to the library were required of me and on one trip a librarian noticed me drawing. She asked me if I wanted to see books about other artists. The librarians kindness changed my life. When I became a Christian at 20, I realized how Jesus had put purpose and meaning into my life, through my art, in the midst of heartache and confusion.
