This book chronicles the relationship between Devereaux Meehan and his youngest son, nicknamed Big Guy. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Devereaux met and married Priscilla in 1947. By the time Big Guy was born in 1958, the Meehans already had five other children. The family gets swept up in the turbulent times of the 1960s and after a clash with his children and the death of one son, Devereaux and his son Big Guy grow close as they spend time driving together on the back roads of America having heart-to-heart conversations that serve to bridge to very different generations.
