Though unconscious and critically injured, Mike Webster is alive;at least for the short term. Dark forces were already searching for him when he was wounded, and while elaborate measures are being taken to have him disappear, there are now indications his enemies believe Webster did not die in New Orleans. Realizing that, they are taking great risks to find him. "I will cut his throat and spit in his face as he takes his last breath." These words launch a pursuit that tears across the eastern United States leaving death in its wake. The individual charged with locating Webster is particularly menacing. He also totally void of emotion. These traits are terrifying and dangerous, yet persuasive as the killer practices his iniquitous profession. Recognizing his vulnerability, Webster prepares for an expected confrontation. He is healing and gaining strength even as his enemies close in on him and those who would harbor him . . . but will he be ready in time? There are other complications, too. Webster's physician, Dr. Irene Dunn, experiences an immediate and deep attraction to the mysterious man in her care. In many ways, he is so very like her own lost love. Though Webster finds Dr. Irene Dunn appealing, he is torn between this new possibility for a normal life and thoughts of his recent friendship with Cary Warren, the woman whose memory keeps drifting through his mind. Can he escape those thoughts and be happy with another; more importantly, does he want to? But, for now, there no time for either. The enemy is rushing toward Webster at the only place he felt comfortable in a long time. He is standing to face whatever may come to kill or be killed; there are parallels to the hunted one that has returned to its den. An animal, when run to ground, will often turn and fight for its life, putting up a vicious struggle since there is nothing more to lose. Webster is familiar with the game . . . and will not go gently.
