This is the story of the life on the edge of the law that took JACQUES PASCAL BUTCHER from the farm to Montreal, from farmer and butcher to race course owner and real estate developer. He married into and joined the established Dubois French Montreal crime family. During his 46 years, he married five wives, fathered seven children both legitimate and illegitimate, and lived a notorious life until he became the victim of the organization he created. His chief regret was the rebuff of his first son, Vincent, who vowed his whole life to kill the father who beat his mother prior to their escape to Detroit when he was five. So much alike, they led totally separate lives, only to be re-united when Jacques was in the coffin in St. Jovite where he lived in a mansion dominating a private lake with only one other mansion owned by the former President of the Bank of Canada. His fifth wife, a stunning Mohawk woman, and two small sons, stood in one corner of the mortuary. Twenty men in black suits stood in another. A 30 foot wreath in the shape of a spoke of five wheels, with one spoke cut out, stood in front of the mortuary. Vincent, the oldest son, was kissed on both cheeks by the leader of the black suits, an ominous sign. Vincent warned the Mohawk woman the men in black suits would not allow her to keep her home, and he barely escaped their chase to kill him on the way to the airport from St. Jovite along the mountainous road from Mt. Tremblant.Jacques Pascal commanded attention whenever he entered a room. It is so strange the words that would come first to mind in describing him are suave and dashing. The son of the most prosperous farmer in McGregor, this dark-haired, dark-eyed well-built young man had none of the air of a farm boy. Only 20 years old, he had the misfortune to impregnate the voluptuous 15-year-old Shannon Clancy from Detroit in the back seat of his car during a College party and found himself married to a young girl who, his parents claimed, "got herself pregnant." The stubborn and uncompromising Catherine and Joseph would not welcome Shannon into their home and offered the young couple the empty chicken coop on the farm in McGregor. Jacques, the "good" Catholic boy, gave up College for farm work. He took charge of the slaughter house and accepted the designation JACQUES PASCAL BUTCHER, the sign on the door of his truck. Within five years his life was intolerable: three sons, a nagging wife for whom he had no affection, and a farm life he despised. He had to escape from the trap. When he beat his wife and broke her feet, Kelly Clancy came from Detroit with three Irish mugs and rescued her daughter and three grandsons by breaking through the door with an axe. With the help of the priest and the town prostitute, they escaped through the tunnel while Jacques waited at the Ambassador Bridge. Shannon divorced Jacques, and she got a job on the assembly line making B24s in Detroit. Jacques never saw Shannon or the boys again. Only Vincent, the oldest son, was invited by Catherine and Joseph to visit them at the farm. There Vincent learned to drive the tractor and the other farm equipment, to shoot a gun and to hunt the game on the farm, and to cut the meat in the slaughter house. Jacques financed his move out of McGregor by secretive petty smuggling of cigarettes and booze with his buddies Frenchie and Hungarian Joe. They almost got caught smuggling Chinese hidden in gunny sacks from Canada to Detroit. Jacques' underground career in McGregor culminated with a huge diamond heist and a police chase on the Bridge so cleverly executed it totally stumped the police. The three men moved to Montreal where Jacques dressed for his new role and integrated into the city to became a colorful figure, known both for his business expertise and his passion as a bush pilot for hunting and fishing.
