In 1938 Peggy Becker married Tommy Morehouse, and went off with him to Malaya, where he managed his family rubber plantation. Peggy's cousin Vennie was her bridesmaid - and over the next seven years, in peace and war, Peg and Vennie exchanged letters in a world darkened by war. Tommy Morehouse became a prisoner of the Japanese, and Peg escaped Singapore with her son, to spend the remainder of the war in Australia, wondering if Tommy were still alive. Vennie became an Army nurse, serving in North Africa, Italy and France - and their lives continued to be woven together.
