In three words: "The Sixties Scoop." Nighthawk and Little Elk is an old-style tale of injustice and redemption in a contemporary setting, echoing sentiments from the ancient folk tale "Br?derchen und Schwesterchen" by the Grimm brothers, the local indigenous legend of "Thoxweya", and recent socio-political, historical events ("The Sixties Scoop"), where children were taken away from their families to be placed with 'white' foster parents. The characters in the book are recognizable 12" avatars of living members of the local Coast Salish community, painstakingly crafted with the aid of a 3D printer and a multitude of other custom materials, then photographed and composited into their (local) scenarios by the author/illustrator. The novel is teacher written/designed for the purpose of formal and informal educational use in social studies, for First Nations content, and language learning.
