RetroBlakesberg Volume 1: The Film Archives is a hardcover coffee table book that is a retrospective of renowned Pop Culture photographer Jay Blakesberg's life in pictures and words. At the start of the pandemic in March 2020, Jay's daughter, Ricki Blakesberg started an Instagram account called RetroBlakesberg. The premise of the Instagram page is that it consists only of Jay's photographs shot on film and is 100% curated by Ricki. The book presents this collection of Jay's iconic images beginning with his high school days in the late 1970s up until he switched full time to Digital in the mid 2000s. The book is divided into four chapters by decade with an engaging essay by Jay at the beginning of each where he discusses what was going on with his life, career, and pop culture during that time. These stories give you an inside look into how Jay approached his photography. While the book features many iconic musical artists over the decades as well as the fans who attend these concerts, the book also tells the important story of the fashion of these musical genres throughout these decades. With the book broken up by decade, it is interesting to see the evolution of the iconic fashion of the time. Artists included in this book are The Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, Michael Franti, and many, many more. With a foreword by renowned Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne and an Introduction essay by spiritual activist and musician, Michael Franti along with extended captions and essays by Jay Blakesberg, the book paints a solid picture of a 40+ year career documenting pop culture. Jay's photographs continue to be relevant as both a time capsule and mirror of the twisted sliver of popular culture he documented over the years.
