A Journey With Me As A Cowboy, Warrior, And Lawyer

The chronicles that follow detail memories of my life as a young boy growing up in Coaldale Junction ? a town in central Nevada with a lone truck stop, bar, caf?, and hotel. Coaldale Junction sits at the intersection of Highways 6 and 95, 40 miles from Tonopah and 30 miles from Mina, the closest towns. It is right in the middle of the Nevada desert: sagebrush fields, alkaloid salt marshes, and no fresh drinking water. These memoirs focus first on my childhood and adolescent efforts to become a cowboy on my uncle?s cattle ranch, and then on my days as a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam. In the final section, I recount the trials and tribulations of becoming a successful lawyer in the ?cow counties? of Central Nevada, while struggling to deal with my war memories.What drove me to be a young buckaroo willing to face the many responsibilities and hardships of a cattle ranch? How did I face the dangers, cold winters and hot summers on horseback? Though I was short and skinny, I would quickly learn to ?buck bales? ? that is, load 50-pound bales of hay by using the weight of each bale, and my knees, to move it off the loader and stack it on the trailer. You will read about my unpleasant memories of sewing sacks on an old Massey Harris combine. The chaff makes your skin itch, and your eyes red and swollen. You will hear about the horrors of being a hunter/killer team scout pilot in the jungles of South Vietnam. You will read about the inner turmoil I faced in transforming from a nature-loving cowboy who liked to shoot lizards and jackrabbits, to a hunter and killer of the Viet Cong guerilla fighters.Finally, I will describe the struggles of trying to deal with the effects of war while serving as an attorney in the vast area of Central Nevada, going from courthouse to courthouse for sometimes 300 or 400 miles of travel each day.
