The story takes Evie Madison from her childhood in the Girls' Home during World War II to her marriage to Nick Landry, a law student. Evie and Nick weather the challenges of raising children, nourishing their relationship and overcoming the impact of a fling, but Evie's Alzheimer's disease tips Nick over the edge. When the pressure to send her to a nursing home becomes overwhelming, Nick bundles her into their car and begins a thousand-mile drive from Central California to Canada and their only hope of staying together. Book club questions are included.
