I must help my mother and take father's place, Lyanna whispers to herself while she watches her bruised and beaten father tossed into the soldier's truck. Within hours Lyanna, a thirteen-year-old girl, and her family are forced to escape from their home in Syria to the refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos. The family waits each day for granted asylum to the United States. A huge stray cat adopts the family and brings them smiles in the filthy, overcrowded Camp Moria. Protesters screaming, "Go home!" Gangs with bored, angry teenagers are a constant threat. She is attacked and beyond scared but bravely fights the bully who is blackmailing her family. She's determined to support her mother and protect Jamal and Maya. Lyanna realizes as the days go by that she's trapped in a nightmare, and immigrating to the United States is the only answer.
