This book will examine the election of those unto salvation, the process whereby God predestines some to eternal life in the heavily realm, and what part of the process belongs to them in terms of accepting such a gracious offer. Whilst the notion of predestination may sound scandalous (i.e. divine favouritism), it is an oft-repeated theme in both the Old and New Testaments. The Israelites were chosen of God; Jesus was chosen as His elect to bring salvation through His atonement to the lost; certain people were chosen for special leadership and prophetic roles (i.e. Moses, David, and Jeremiah); Isaac was chosen over Ishmael; Jacob was chosen over Esau; and the Church was chosen to supersede Israel (with a remnant of both forming the final elect). Yet if humanity's elect is simply chosen of God from the beginning of time, what aspect of free will does this denote? Additionally, would God even wish to have an extended family of those He has caused to accept Him, rather than those who have freely desired such a union? Additionally, if all the elect have been so predestined of God, why do the biblical accounts not make this clear? Why for example, does Paul suggest that anyone calling upon the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:9-13), if only the elect who make such a call will be saved? And if the elect are certain of their assurance, why does Peter advise believers to press on to make their election sure (2Peter 1:10)? And again, if God wishes all to come to repentance and be saved (2Peter 3:9; 1Timothy 2:3-4; Acts 17:30), how can all come to this position if only the elect can be saved? Moreover, if the elect are certain of their salvation, why should they press on in their faith; what would prevent them from leaving the vine, renouncing Christ and living an immoral life? Does such a notion merely encourage immorality and apostasy amongst the believing community? So, in order to answer the question of what is meant by the terms 'predestination' and the 'elect of God' and to what extent humanity plays a role in the process, this book will endeavour to undertake.
