This little book of poetry and prose came about because I have tools that belonged to my wife Mimi's great grandfather Patrick, in particular two chisels that he used in the anthracite coal mines of Wyoming Valley in North-eastern Pennsylvania. Those chisels, splayed on their butt ends and perfectly dressed on the business ends got me thinking about my youth in Wilkes-Barre PA, anthracite country. And, it got me thinking about the men and women and children of the anthracite coal mining era. It got me thinking especially of the period from the nineteenth century when in 1808 the first commercial mining began until 1959 when the Knox mine disaster in Port Griffith PA ended deep mining of anthracite.
