Marty & Me: The Family Reunion

Marty was a genius and had been attending classes at Southern University in Nashville since he was 8 years old. Well, not as a 'real' university student, but as a student from the school for gifted children that was connected to the university. While Marty did well at the university, he was socially awkward and isolated because of his quirks. For example, he was bewildered by figurative speech and usually took non-literal language, well, literally. Whether it was idioms, metaphors, similes, hyperbole or slang, he took them all strictly at face value. Once he learned the 'real' meaning of a figure of speech, though, he always remembered it since he had eidetic memory, popularly known as 'photographic memory.' Until he learned that 'real' meaning, however, he was in for all kinds of troubles.That's where his cousin, Jenny came in. Though she wasn't a genius like Marty, she was exceptionally bright. You could even say brilliant. Her most outstanding virtues, however, lay elsewhere. In her sensitivity and empathy. When she and Marty first met at 7 years old, they immediately became 'best friends.' Over the years, Jenny took upon herself the task of being Marty's social mentor and teaching him how to act like a 'normal kid' and not like an 'underaged professor.'Jenny and Marty's friendship wasn't one sided either. Jenny learned a great deal from Marty and not just 'dry, esoteric facts' he could spout at the drop of a hat. His unwavering honesty and loyalty affected her in ways neither of them recognized at the time. She came to depend on him as much as he did on her. Even though they spent only one week a year in each other's company while at their family reunion, they nurtured and sustained their relationship through incessant letter writing and frequent phone calls.This book recounts the happenings of an eventful week at their family reunion when they were 12 years old and on the brink of adolescence.
