A long time friend had found the woman of his dreams, and I'd agreed to accompany him on a drive from Vancouver to Santa Monica and attend their wedding. It should have been straight-forward and delightful, but of course it was neither. It's odd how one's life can change so profoundly from seemingly innocuous events. That, I have to admit, is JUDELINE in a nutshell, the depiction of my life when I was twenty-seven. Nothing much happens, although now that I think about it, I fell into a twisted romance while all about me raged rape and murder and a riot. Not to mention I almost bought the farm, three times. There was also a wedding, a divorce, and a funeral, and a brief encounter--an affair perhaps, although I'm not calling it that. Maybe, just maybe, it was a better road trip than I first thought. This series of books covers a span of fewer than five years. This one is fairly conventional, and although there are hints of peculiar things to come, it wasn't until the evnts occurred that are covered in the second volume that I realized my life really wasn't going to unfold quite as I expected it would.I'm not complaining, of course. Never could you accuse me of that, but it turns out my understanding of reality may have been somewhat short-sighted; in fact, it seems that reality isn't at all what.... Sorry, I ought not to say anything more about that at this stage, but if you're so inclined, put your feet up, make yourself comfortable, and come along for the ride. Before you go to all that trouble, I have to add that everything you're going to read in these volumes--should you devote yourself to the undertaking--is the truth. It all happened exactly as I've recorded it. Oh, fine, there may be two or three tiny instances of exuberance, I suppose we could call them, but beyond those you could add every word to your loan application and your banker would hand over the money and thank you for your honesty. And, really, the word tiny is hyperbolic in this sense; microscopic or subatomic or even infinitesimal are more apt adjectives. Trust me.
