Claudia Larrain's "The Forgotten Ones" provides the latest research findings and observations of the homelessness crisis around the world. She summarizes the history of how many individuals ended up living in squalor. Many are mentally ill, who were thrown out of mental asylums due to overcrowding and unethical treatments. However, a contingency plan was never put in place to deal with serious mental illnesses and they ended up living on the streets.
