My 25 Sites In The Holy Land: Experiences Of A Guide

Some people, pilgrims to the Holy Land, and friends, have suggested to me several times to put in writing my experience and love to the Holy Land. Even some priests, whom I have accompanied in their experience and preparation to obtain the Guide card, have insinuated or begged me clearly to do it. Now my nephews do it too.I will try to record my experiences step by step, learned from teachers, study, readings, prayer and affection to the Holy Land. Not only about the "stones," but the living community of the Mother Church of Jerusalem, the "living stones." Of course, regardless that someday they may be interesting and may be published. I never thought to do it; If I decide to do it now, it is because it could serve someone as a usefulness, or because it is useful in my spare time. And these lines do not imply any personal merit. Because any person, who spends time in a certain activity, acquires more and more knowledge, as he reads, explains, listens, takes notes and stores knowledge. And more, if your personal work is enriched with the contribution of friends and colleagues. We all learn from each other.My first pilgrimage to the Holy Land was at the end of September 1975. As a prize in my silver wedding of priest and resulting an achievement of a dream since I was a student. I was deeply touched by the pilgrimage: "I will come back," I told myself when I returned home. But those days the Archbishop changed my parish, which would be my last change and together with my father's illness ..., delayed the second pilgrimage to 1987. Seventy-three times I went to the Holy Land. On the third time I made tour leader (the first of the parish) and I was soon granted the Guide-Accompanying card, after the 15-day course in the Holy Land.It is a grace, that I will never be able to thank enough the Lord. It has involved some work, some effort, some sleep, enthusiasm. Handling books, making hundreds of cards, improving, breaking, changing with other guides; gave and received; I did not need to consult much, because I knew them by heart ... just a name or a certain date.I know, of course, roads, highways, mountains, rivers, deserts, churches, cities, drivers, Franciscans, hotels, Casas Novas. Street vendors know me. All them know the guides and call us "abuna," which means "father"; But to me, the street vendors of Bethlehem call me "sidi," which means "grandfather"; I am the sidi of the guides.
