The German Shorthaired Pointer is a medium to large sized breed of hunting dog that was developed during the 19th century in Germany. The breed is also commonly known as the 'Deutscher Kurzhaariger, ' the 'Vorstehhund, ' and the 'Kurzhaar.' The German Shorthaired Pointer is a descendant of the German Bird Dog and the Old Spanish Pointer. It is also believed that the breed has traces of hound and tracking dogs: such as the English Pointer and the Arkwright Pointer. The German Shorthaired Pointer was developed to be a versatile hunting breed and gun dog that is capable of hunting both on land and in the water. The breed has a streamlined build with powerful muscular legs that allow it to capable of running, swimming and changing direction rapidly. The German Shorthaired Pointer's powerful build also makes it capable of retrieving relatively heavy game. The German Shorthaired Pointer has a short, flat and dense undercoat which is protected by stiff guard hairs that make the breed's coat resistant to water, the cold and most other weathers. The breed's coat normally comes in the following colorations: dark brown, liver (colloquially called 'chocolate' or 'chestnut'), black, black roan, white, live roan, liver and white or black and white. The German Shorthaired Pointer normally has a solidly colored head and a speckled or 'ticked' body. It is also not uncommon for the German Shorthaired Pointer to have large patches of color known as 'saddles.' The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a German Shorthaired Pointer. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your German Shorthaired Pointer with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the German Shorthaired Pointer is a highly intelligent, bold affectionate, enthusiastic and willing to please breed. The German Shorthaired Pointer loves interacting with humans and spending time with their family units. It is important to note that as a sporting breed, the German Shorthaired Pointer has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the German Shorthaired Pointer has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet.
