Man's need for love, companionship, and freedom are woven together in dramatic fashion in "Try Hard Not to Scream," a thriller. Walker is a prison-wise, sometimes violent, stand-up convict. To comply with a request from a former friend, now an ex-con, he agrees to assist a new prisoner who calls himself "Star," a young, blonde, bright and attractive yet naively arrogant and coquettish problem who complicates Walker's escape plan, which is only days from fruition. The machinations of the escape preparation are complex and sprinkled throughout the story as various characters do their parts to bring it about. One character, a bright black prison leader who knows Walker only by reputation agrees to do him a vital favor, create a specified diversion at a specified time, in exchange for Walker's help in getting some critical testimony and documents to buttress a lawsuit prisoners have brought regarding various horrific prison conditions. Another important character in the escape is Walker's friend, Alex Nardo, known for previous escapes. Nardo is buried in a tiny, bare cell on the upper floor of the prison hospital per Deputy Warden Dawkins' instructions but is moved to an open ward by the new Warden, who bristles at the suggestion that he "consult" with Dawkins, who actually runs the prison, before approving the transfer. Outside, Captain Orrin Parker renews his affair with Jane Dickens, who works at a local bar her family owns and which Parker and other prison personnel frequent. Parker finally acknowledges to Jane and himself how important the prison job and his soon-to-be-realized ambition to replace Dawkins as Deputy Warden have become in his life. Prison is what he knows, and running one is something he can do. The daring and unusual escape effort and a confrontation Walker has with Dawkins provide dramatic climaxes, and an epilogue briefly relates the fate of the primary characters.
