More Than Just a Prank is the first book in the Rebecca Bridges Amateur Sleuth Series. This story introduces the reader to Rebecca, her family, and close friends. The small, quaint town of Fremont with its local authorities are also introduced. Their characters will take an active role in most of Rebecca's cases.Rebecca's first notable sleuthing case revolves around her elderly neighbor, Annie Owens. Some of Annie's important mail, both outgoing and incoming, is missing. Adelle, Rebecca's mother, suggests to Annie that her daughter may be able to find out what happened. Rebecca, who always wants a mystery to solve, takes the case.True to her character, Rebecca recruits the help of her brother, Adam, his best friend, Lucas Hancock, and her best friend, Carrie Godfrey. Rebecca's parents, wanting to be supportive of their daughter, offer their assistance too. After a busy Saturday morning of helping Mrs. Owens set up online banking and bill paying, plus fixing problems with Annie's aging house, the teens decide to go for a swim at the local pool. It's there, amid the fun and chaos, that Rebecca discovers a clue to Annie's missing mail. It could not have happened if Adam had not rescued a little boy from drowning. Adam's quick response in finding the drowning boy caught the attention of the pool's manager. Adam was invited to apply for a position as a lifeguard. At the same time Adam was filling out his job application, Rebecca and Carrie, who no longer felt like swimming since watching the little boy and his distraught mother, were in the locker room changing after their swim. Rebecca has always had lucky streak. The circumstances, or coincidences, surrounding that particular afternoon at the pool presented the opportunity for Rebecca to overhear a conversation between two women.Armed with the new information, Rebecca and her friends do a thorough investigation of the young teen who did odd jobs for Annie. One interview led to another young man, then another. Over the course of the weekend, five young men were found to know of Annie's habit of paying her bills through the mail! The culprit was identified, and the case took an unexpected twist! To teach the boys an unforgettable lesson, Rebecca conspires with the Chief of Police, Lucas's father who is the municipal judge, and other adults who fall under Rebecca's uncanny art of persuasion.Rebecca originally titled her entry as The Case of the Missing Mail in her Case Journal, but during the judge's final remarks at the boys hearing, she changed it to More Than Just a Prank because, as the judge stated, it was so much more.
