The story begins just after fifteen-year-old Rebecca Bridges rescues a young kitten from the side of the road as she, her parents, and her best friend, Carrie Godfrey, are traveling down the I-5 Freeway in northern California. To assure that the kitten is healthy, Rebecca seeks out a veterinary to do a quick check up and learn how to care for such a young kitten. Dr. Baker invites Rebecca to spend the night with her kitten in the back room at the veterinary office. It turns out to be one of the most heart-wrenching, memorable experiences of Rebecca's young life.Rebecca ingratiates herself with the young vet who invites her to come along as her assistant to the birth of a foal early the next morning. Rebecca's second memorable experience happens as she witnesses the birth of the foal. Rebecca's twelve hours spent in the veterinary office, and assisting the doctor out in the field, gave her new insights into the animal kingdom. She was anxious to return home to Fremont, and not only procure a vet for her new kitten, Penny, but assist in helping animals.Rebecca was home only a few minutes before she learned of a new mystery to solve. Prized pedigreed pets were missing! The local newspaper told the sad story. Rebecca instinctively moved into her detective mode.During an interview with the local veterinary who cared for five of the missing dogs and cats, the vet invites Rebecca and her friends to help in a rescue of dogs from a puppy mill. The filth and lack of care for the animals that Rebecca and her friends rescue, is a poignant eye-opener that gives them a first-hand knowledge of the grim plight of many helpless animals. It also substantiated her uncanny feeling that the pedigreed pets may have been abducted. Rebecca resolves upon a plan to create a sting operation to catch the abductors in the act of stealing another prized pet. Rebecca's brother Adam and his friend Lucas provide necessary aid and support. Her parents, William and Adelle Bridges, the local veterinary, police department, and those of the neighboring towns join in the sting, hoping to bring the perpetrators to justice.Horse lovers, people who love dogs and cats, and people who enjoy watching or having their dogs participate in agility competition, will love this story! People whose hearts are warmed by animal rescue stories will want to snuggle with their favorite pet while reading this tale. A great book to be read as a family or by young adults!
