This is the story of Jose Francisco Navarro, a Mexican American man, Chicano, who grew up amongst the Southern California gang culture. Raised in a single-parent household, he witnessed addiction from his abusive father and endured depression and financial hardship with his mother. As a teenager, Jose was exposed to a life of drugs, sex, and partying. Looking for a way out and a chance to better himself, he enlisted in the Army at age 19 and became a paratrooper in the Army's legendary 82nd Airborne Division. In 2007, Jose deployed to Afghanistan where he experienced fierce combat with the Taliban. In one life-changing engagement, Jose's scout platoon of 14 paratroopers was overrun by more than 200 Taliban insurgents, leaving him so severely injured he barely escaped with his life. Jose's injuries were so extreme that he spent the next seven and a half years in hospitals, and endured over 100 surgeries where he bat- tled to regain the use of his legs and restore his body. When Jose got out of the military and came home, another war began as he started fighting the battles within himself. He fought for love, family, purpose, and acceptance. Facing impossible odds, Jose was able to adapt and overcome. He wanted this book to prove that no matter how hopeless the circumstances may seem, you can still find joy and happiness in the end.
