Lavern Martin has ran harvest crews for years, cutting wheat from Texas to Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska. Over the years he has met numerous harvesting crews across the country. In that time he has seen families who work togather including men and women. He has never seen an all girls hravet crew. Because of the oil boom which men are working in for great money he has no options so, He hires an all girl crew. He soon finds that supervising girls rather than boys are different. The girls work as hard as boys and complete the job of cuttig wheat the same. They are all hard workers who work in the field until the wheat is cut. They do bring with them emotion and a different sense of humor. The crew are five girls who come togather to form a bond of friendsip though from different backgrounds. Lavern sees a crew for harvesting not two black girls from the city, two white girls who were raised on a farm and know how to work, or the young white girl who has had a troubled life. The five of them see the terror of a tornado which the destructive force is terrifying, to the accident that will test their faith seeing one of their crew hurt. It will be through the laughter, and tears they work for the crabby Lavern who has a heart but hides under his hard driving work ethic. It will be this summer of working in the wheat fields that will prepare them for the adventure of life that lies ahead.
