Results from the excavation of thishigh-status Roman villa confirm its occupation throughout the Roman period andbeyond, illuminating lifestyle and landscape through detailed analysis of itsarchitecture, finds and environmental remains. This site includes rectilinearenclosures and associated Roman style buildings dating from the mid-1stcentury, and represents the earliest known proto-villa in Dorset. The buildingsresemble those excavated in the south-east of Britain, with the acquisition ofbuilding materials, pottery, glassware, household, personal items and coinageconfirming the economic vitality and wealth needed to sustain an elitelifestyle. Phases of construction and demolition are discussed, highlightingdramatic changes in the use of the site.
