""Arms and the Man"" is a play written by George Bernard Shaw that was first performed in 1894. It is a satirical comedy that pokes fun at the romanticized view of war and the heroism associated with it. The play is set during the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885 and follows the story of a young Bulgarian woman named Raina who falls in love with a Swiss mercenary named Bluntschli. Bluntschli, however, is not the brave and heroic soldier that Raina imagines him to be - he is actually more interested in chocolates and sleep than in fighting. As the play progresses, the characters' illusions about war and love are challenged and ultimately shattered. The play is known for its witty dialogue, clever wordplay, and sharp social commentary. It is considered one of Shaw's most popular and enduring works. It's good enough for a man with only you to stand between him and death. (As they look at one another for a moment, Raina hardly able to believe that even a Servian officer can be so cynically and selfishly unchivalrous, they are startled by a sharp fusillade in the street. The chill of imminent death hushes the man's voice as he adds) Do you hear? If you are going to bring those scoundrels in on me you shall receive them as you are. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
