Like many cultures, most of the Native American tribes ascribed names to the full moons. This helped them keep track of the seasons. The names used by the Algonquin tribes, who lived in a broad area from New England westward to Lake Superior, were adopted and used by many of the English settlers in the Northern Colonies, and applied to their Gregorian calendars. These are the names that are most familiar and the ones we have chosen to use.
