Sally Winton is an ambitious and single-minded reporter on a local newspaper who dreams of investigative journalism on a national newspaper. Bill Thomas is an experienced detective approaching retirement with little time for the ruthless and, occasionally, unscrupulous means Sally uses to reach her ends. When the discovery of a woman's body is connected to the mysterious reappearance of the missing teenager Eve Lawrence, Sally is determined to get her story and, hence, her big break. Undeterred by the consequences for her nearest and dearest, Sally ploughs on regardless with her own investigation, not just disrupting Bill's investigation but withholding evidence in an increasingly difficult and unpleasant case.
