Herin Freeholder is a young student at the Institute for Magic in Kress, capital city of the Empire. When his magic goes badly awry, Herin believes he has killed a fellow student and flees the school, fearful that he will be arrested and executed. He meets a mysterious stranger named Shadow who begins to teach him levels of magic he would never have learned at the school, and in return Herin aids Shadow in his clandestine activities in the city. In the course of his duties, Herin rescues a young woman named Ilsa, a tavern worker who is unaware that she can perform magic, an ability thought to be beyond the capabilities of women. Together, Herin, Shadow, and Ilsa travel far to the north, hoping to find a safe place to live. Unfortunately, the Empire comes under a sudden attack from its neighbor and the trio are swept up in a war of survival, a war where their combined magical skills might mean the difference between life and death. Herin learns that the more magic he acquires, the harsher his challenges. It seems that his ability is making his life harder rather than easier, and he understands that this reality will be the true test of whether or not he deserves the title of magician.
