It's been twenty years since the mysterious storm that decimated the earth and drove mankind to the brink of extinction, twenty years since one young man defied all odds to keep a final promise to his sister. Now, handfuls of scattered survivors here and there have begun to regroup into two main communities - the peaceful, self-sufficient farming community of Belle Plaine to the north, and the violent, heavily-armed raiders of Mankato to the south. With no desire to become involved in the affairs of either community, Erik is content now to live a lonely but peaceful life in the woods. He migrates with the animals he hunts and emerges from the woods only once or twice a year to trade and visit in a small, remote village. His solitary ways and intimidating appearance have earned him a reputation as a mysterious, possibly dangerous man known as the bear who is best left alone. Erik's resolve to continue his solitary life in the woods is soon tested as he finds himself drawn into a looming, violent confrontation between the raiders of Mankato and the people of Belle Plaine. But this simple farming community is much more than it appears. It holds secrets that could not only determine the outcome of the impending battle but also put Erik's own life in danger. If Erik survives, it may well change his destiny forever. Excerpt: "Quiet," Vern commanded, not taking his eyes off the tall, silent figure at the edge of their camp. So, this was the bear. He had heard lots of stories about him but had never seen him, and now he realized that he'd only half-believed in his existence all along. But now there was no doubt. The bear was most definitely real, and he was here, now, standing there like some goddamn grim reaper deciding on whether or not he was going to mow them all down. What was his game? He could have easily killed them all in their sleep. Instead, he had taken their guns and set up watch over them, waiting for them to wake up. There was something a bit creepy and a lot frightening about that. "Hey!" Vern called to him. No response. He took a couple of tentative steps toward the imposing figure, cocking his head slightly, looking for some reaction. The bear remained silent, impassive. Vern took a few more steps. He heard his men moving up behind him, following a couple of steps behind. When he had approached to within ten feet, the bear finally moved, shifting his feet a little and lifting the end of his staff out of the snow. He held it at an angle across his chest - an unmistakable warning not to approach any closer. Vern and his men stopped. "You shouldn't just walk into someone's camp unannounced." Vern said. "It's dangerous." The bear said nothing. He was close enough now to see some of the bear's features. But Vern wished he could see more than just the man's eyes through that thick beard and long hair. He couldn't read any expression at all. But those eyes... they were cold, hard. There was no fear in them at all. Even outnumbered four to one, the easy way he held that staff and those cold, uncaring eyes said there would be no doubt as to the outcome of this encounter. The bear would walk away. As for Vern and his men, whether they lived or died depended on what they did in the next sixty seconds.
