Legend and Legacy, Book Three of the Shadow of White trilogy, brings the story of Erik and the survivors of humanity full circle, from the end of one age of man to the beginnings of another in the shadow of a new ice age. Forty years after the storm that nearly ended all life on Earth, Mira, a recently orphaned but smart and self-reliant twelve-year-old girl, is one of only a handful of people still remaining in the increasingly harsh conditions of the north. Born during the Long Winter that doomed many of the survivors of the storm, Mira is determined to reach the fabled sanctuary of Nova Springs far to the south. Through either accident or destiny, Mira meets the older, scarred, more jaded Erik, who initially wants nothing to do with her or anyone else. At the urging of a mystic holy woman, however, Erik agrees to help Mira escape certain death in the looming Great Winter by guiding her across the White, a frozen wasteland of ice and snow to the south so deadly that Erik is the only one to have ever survived an encounter with it. Braving the extreme cold and devastating storms of the White, Erik and Mira must learn to trust and rely on each other in order to survive long enough to reach the other side, where Mira will come face-to-face with Erik's legacy and the remarkable destiny they both share - a destiny that began forty years earlier with a storm and a promise. Excerpt: By the next morning, the dark clouds were directly over them and heavy snow was still falling. It was now over a foot deep. As they resumed their trek southwards, Mira turned to glance back to the north, as if she could see the Lakota village from here. The village had been experiencing this snow for at least a week now. She thought of Standing Willow, John, Tashina, the women who had made her clothing, and everyone else she had met there. They had known what was coming and had chosen to stay and accept their fate. Nothing that is here now will survive, Tashina had said. Mira couldn't remember if the old woman had said that in person or in one of her dreams. It didn't matter. The Great Winter had begun. It will last for many generations. Because of the snow, it took them just over three days before they passed through a large stretch of woods and came out on the side of a hill overlooking an expansive, flat plain. Below them, at the foot of the long, sloping hill, Mira could see the crumbling, snow-covered remains of a small town. But it was the plain beyond the town that filled her heart with dread. "Is that... the White?" she asked, staring at the seemingly endless flat expanse of ice and snow. Erik simply nodded. It wasn't just the endless vastness of it all that filled Mira with a sense of dread and hopelessness; it was the emptiness. There were no trees in the snowfield beyond; not even a single bush or blade of grass. The trees below them and to the east and west simply stopped at the border of the White, forming a nearly straight line for as far as she could see in either direction. And in the sky above, the dark clouds of the Great Winter had also stopped at the border, directly above where the trees stopped. It was as if there was some invisible barrier that nothing was allowed or even meant to cross. "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here," Erik said, almost to himself, as he gazed out across the White. It sounded familiar. Mira thought it must be a quote from a book, but she couldn't quite place it. "Where is that from?" she asked. Still staring out over the desolate expanse before them, Erik replied, "They say it's written on the gates of Hell."
