Workplace Civility Matters! In fact workplace civility is such a significant and necessary conversation that I have created the Workplace Civility Matters(c) program which is a successful organizational approach to build and sustain a healthy culture and a civil workplace. Workplace Civility Matters and you have the power to do something about it! Understanding what causes the deviant workplace behaviors, and then committing to counteract the behavior on an individual and organizational level is within your grasp. Let's Get Civil In The Workplace begins by presenting the idea that our work life offers independent value for workers, beyond the basics of shelter, sustenance, and survival. We recognize that each worker aspires to perform his work in harmony with his surroundings, and with his fellow workers. However, in recent years, we have come to understand that, regardless of trade or profession, it is not a common truth that today's workplace offers the same degree of harmony to each and every worker. What we do know is that uncivil behaviors found within the greater society have taken hold within the contemporary workplace. The book examines the impact that uncivil behaviors have on our workplaces and within our work lives. The book also explores the emotional, professional, social, and spiritual toll that workplace incivility has on each of us at a very personal level, as well as on our work life, our family and our friends. For each of us who have witnessed or endured a work life disrupted by uncivil behavior, this book serves as our declaration of war. We are no longer willing to accept workplace incivility in our businesses and organizations! Let's Get Civil In The Workplace offers more than an explanation of how we arrived at our current uncivil circumstance. The book, presented in three parts, offers a series of solutions and strategies to combat workplace incivility and build and sustain a civil workplace: Firstly, the book presents an explanation of the rise of deviant workplace behaviors because of four shifts in our contemporary world. The four shifts can be understood as a consequence of broader social changes, decline in trust as a universal value, changes in the workplace as a result of global markets, and finally changes in demands and expectations experienced by contemporary workers. Secondly, the book presents the antithesis of workplace incivility, to illustrate workplace civility, as a preferred organizational behavior, and we then explore multiple strategies that employees can execute towards creating a civil workplace. Thirdly, the book presents six overarching strategies that an organization can employ from a corporate perspective to develop and execute a framework for building and sustaining a civil workplace. The corporate approach to building a civil organization is centered on 1. Surveying and assessing the prevalence and impact of workplace incivility, 2. Building civility as a leadership behavior into your corporate strategy, 3. Introducing civility as a cultural norm to your workforce through keynote speakers, seminars, and presentations at small group and organization-wide events, 4. Developing and present experiential workshops to address and resolve group issues around workplace incivility, 5. Appoint and train civility ambassadors to help organizations and work groups build positive cultures, and 6. Develop individual and group executive coaching programs to address specific issues around deviant workplace behaviors.
