This book is written to remember my Grandfather James Thomas Napier. He was a special person to me, and throughout my life I have always thought that he is the one that I wanted to pattern my life after. He left a legacy in Bell County that people still remember, and even today when I go back to Bell County to visit family, people still talk about him and tell stories of how he was always helping others. What a legacy he left for his future generations, and one that I am so proud of, to be called his grandson. I believe that the following that was written in the history of Bell County Volume One best describes the kind of man he was. James Thomas. Napier, married the first time 1. Mellie Saylor, daughter of John L. Saylor, and had two children: (1) Lillie Napier, (2) Robert Napier; II. Lucy Bailey, daughter of A. J. Bailey, second wife: (3) Hattie Napier, (4) A. J. Napier, (5) Irene Napier. (who is my mother.) James Thomas Napier was very instrumental in the early development of the coal industry in the Southeastern Kentucky area, as he prospected and opened up the majority of coal mines in the area." He was one of the most respected men in Bell County, and was known as a leader and very influential man in all the activities in the area. He was called upon by all the political powers to be, and had a voice which was heard by all the political parties. He was a man that had a character and integrity that was beyond almost all in the area. He was very influential in the school board of Bell County, and in the court systems, and was always called in to handle any disputes that arose. He was also known as one of the most giving persons as his motto was that he always planted a quarter more in crops than he needed, and gave away a fourth of what he grew to others. He was a man that built a legacy by his character and his integrity, and one that will be remembered always.
