Gerald Henry Pierson was born on May 31st, 1928 in Carrington, North Dakota. His father, Algot Persson, emigrated from Sweden at the age of 16 with $25 in his pocket and he never saw his family in Sweden again. Algot learned English, found work, and raised a family in North Dakota. In this book, his son, Gerald recalls growing up on the plains and describes his family and the farm, school and teachers. He tells what is was like to be hungry while working in the fields as a boy, going through the Great Depression, being a sergeant in the National Guard at the age of 23, and working his way up from bread truck driver to CEO in the financial field. All along the way, he found time to carve wood, write poetry and short stories, take tender care of his wife, Harriet, and play with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In these pages is a story not unlike many of the Greatest Generation, who pulled themselves up by the bootstraps.
