Kalamazoo Oriole: An Urban Fable

During the week before Christmas, a second-hand store proprietor, known to all as the Greek, bitter from years of loss and sorrow, is confronted unexpectedly with his youth, and happier days. Meanwhile, a young, ambitious African-American has moved into one of the beautiful but long neglected homes around the corner from the Greek, and embarks upon an undertaking that will bring him inexorably into the Greek's sad and circumscribed life. Intertwined with the telling of those two stories, the generational tale of the Sardinian immigrants who built those very homes unfolds, and reveals how their lives and the lives of their descendants directly and profoundly affected the Greek's, in ways he may never know.
