The title New Wines In Old Wineskins is an attempt to describe the book. NEW WINE is a new look at scripture passages. OLD WINE is the way we often look at scripture. New wine in old wineskins usually breaks the old wineskins. I hope these thoughts will cause wineskins to expand without breaking. The Bible was not written by philosophers or theologians. It was written by simple nomadic people who derived their idea of God from nature and their unique struggle to understand the meaning of their own lives and the God they seek. Much of it is poetry. Not many persons read the Bible as poetry. This book is an attempt to look at the Bible as a work of poetry. The final part of the book looks at God as a child might look at God. The first section is TREES. It looks at creation, the tree of life, sin, forgiveness. Another section is FOOTPRINTS IN THE SANDS. It is the story of a person who grows tired of the corruption in the city, leaves and attempts to find God. The person comes to the sea. It is so vast that it would be impossible to find God. There are 3 footprints along the shore. The person decides to follow them. They lead to a boat and the footprints are in the boat. The boat travels a long way and lands near a desert. The footprints are there and lead to a mountain. The footprints lead up the mountain. The mountain leads back to the city. They are the footprints of a child, a person with a cane, and a cripple. The poem describes how God is found in each of these persons. This poem and others describe the meaning of God's appearance in each of the subjects of the poem as well as the implications for the reader.LIGHT, SUN, MOON AND STARS describes what the heavenly phenomena we experience tell us about ourselves and how we can allow these phenomena to influence our lives and help us find God. WALKING THE PATH OF LIFE describes how God is found in rocks, a rose, water, floods, and seeds. There is a section DEATH AND TRANSFIGURATION. Death describes a person standing in judgment before God, fearing God's judgment. There is a blank page. God invites the person to write whatever is important in the person's life. That will be the judgment. TRANSFIGURATION looks at the transfiguration of Moses, Elijah, and Jesus who sees Moses and Elijah in his own transfiguration. This section describes how we experience transfiguration in our own life.THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD describes how children might respond to biblical stores. e.g. Adan and Eve: What would have happened if instead of running away Adam and Eve went to God and said we're sorry. That's what we do when we do something bad. GOD KNITS US IN THE WOMB Who taught God to knit? If we are that close to God, why do we have such a hard time talking and listening to God?IF YOU KNOCK ON THE DOOR IT WILL BE OPENED. What will we find when the door is opened? What if we find something we don't like, can we run away?IF YOU ASK ANYTHING IN GOD'S NAME IT WILL BE GIVEN TO YOU. What if we don't know what to ask for? How do we find God? In the phone book? In the church directory? What if we get an answer we don't like? Even the questions which don't seem to have a deeper meaning can be explored. I hope the interpretation of biblical stories will help readers to ask similar questions about biblical passages. The questions above are just a few things in the book.
