Silent Drums: Adapt, Improvise, Overcome! tells the true 73 yearlong (so far) life struggle of a loving husband who also happens to be a decorated gay Vietnam War combat Marine afflicted with terminal cancer caused by his exposure to "Agent Orange." My good friend Bob LeBlanc's life as told in my non-fiction account, which reads like a novel, personalizes the fight for full LGBT equality as it informs, enlightens and entertains by taking you inside the extreme injustice that all of us in my LGBT community are forced to endure. Bob's personal journey spans the entire length of today's LGBT civil rights movement and directly involves U. S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, first in 1975 as a judge on the 9th circuit court of appeals when Kennedy intervened in Bob's case against the Marine Corps then again in Kennedy's SCOTUS decisions in 2013 and 2015 on marriage equality. "Silent Drums" is not a war story as the book also chronicles the challenges faced by Bob's partner, now husband, Julio, who only recently was granted legal immigration status, a process that is considerably less complicated for heterosexual couples. The final chapter of "Silent Drums" seeks a presidential pardon for Bob's conviction in a case brought by a bigoted commanding officer who was upset with Judge Kennedy's issuance of the above mentioned restraining order. The Judge in this case refused to punish Bob and the Prosecutor offered to sign Bob's reenlistment papers when the bigoted CO refused his signature.
