The author's mother, Nancy Lindop, spent half a century conducting genealogical research and building up a private library of family history resources. Her son has taken a couple of Post Office directories from her shelves and compiled an alphabetical listing of tradesmen and gentry that lived in the Staffordshire town of Tamworth in 1818 and 1864. The people listed within had to pay for the privilege of being listed in the original directories so the book does not contain everybody who lived in the town. Interestingly there seems few examples of family businesses being handed from father to son. Running through the book is a description of the town written in 1864. This is virtually an eye-witness commentary giving an expert guide to a 19th century visitor.
