On the 19th July 1916, Australia suffered its worst single day loss in its military history at the Battle of Fromelles in northern France. In just a two hour period on the evening of this infamous day, over 2,000 men would be killed with hundreds more horrifically wounded - in total 5,533 casualties. As part of the allied offensive at the Somme in northern France, Fromelles is not only remembered for this terrible loss, but also encapsulates the gross incompetence of British command which oversaw all ANZAC efforts at the Somme.
