Since their creation the middlemen have always had an alliance with the highmen, but there have always been those who saw the middlemen as far to much like their enemies the lowmen to ever be trusted and others were jealous of their destiny to end the great war. Convinced that, because of that destiny they had supplanted the highman's place in Ahr Ain's plan. Due to the questionable death of two members of the highmen's council Cheen, one of the chief proponents of that view, has risen to power. He is convinced that the middlemen were created as a test to the purity of his own people and he plans to exterminate the middlemen to prove that they are unwilling to accept anything short of perfection. But there are those who believe that all of Ahr Ain's creation has value and among those is his younger brother Chart. When Cheen takes the immensely powerful wizard's keep from the middlemen it forces the middlemen to go to the lowmen for help. Reminding them that the power that Cheen holds will be turned on them as well. This leads to the brother's war and an prophecy that says that the war will end when stronger brother pierces the heart of the weaker. But neither brother can be completely certain that he is indeed the stronger of the two as each has strengths that the other does not until Cheen suggests a test of will that will allow Chart to win the war but in the process destroy himself.
