George is a goodhearted, bumbling Jack-of-all-trades kind of guy while Emma Lee is a Kentucky farm girl turned poet. Her poetry mimics Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson. When Emma Lee is called back to the farm to do the chores because "my seven brothers all took sick," George wonders if she will indeed return "and be once more your little chic."
