Meet Mark Hopkins, he's 16 and feels like a fish out of water at both, his run-down school, and in his own family. They are so just different to him - thankfully! Mark lives on an ageing council estate in Gloucester and constantly dreams of escape. Luckily, he has a kindred spirit in the form of his Uncle, Nathaniel Darcy, a writer who lives in nearby Cheltenham. Mark stays over at Nathaniel's house most weekends to hear Nathaniel's tall tales which help to elevate him from what he refers to as his,'tragically mundane existence'. Mark discovers that Nathaniel has a special gift, allowing elements from each story to appear in his house, and naturally, Mark immediately sets to work trying to discover exactly what his uncle's secret is. One day Nathaniel announces to Mark that he will be having a mysterious house guest for a few days, a psychic medium, named, Madame Clarice who Mark dislikes - at first. Later, his uncle invites Mark to join him for a holiday in France at Clarice's chateau. He is thrilled, until he finds out that his annoying twin sister, Minty will be joining him! Suddenly he thinks that the whole trip is now doomed to failure, but he soon realises, after Minty sees a floating blue orb in her bedroom, that they both share a psychic ability - and that at last, they have a connection. Pretty soon the twins are deeply absorbed in reuniting the mournful spirit of a Jewish mother with both, her long lost daughter and the family fortune, snatched away from them by the Nazis, and reawakening Nathaniel's mysterious past working for the French Resistance, bring the story to a close with a glittering bang!
