PROLOGUE "Romulus and Remus" (Autumn, 1967) One day, two babies, left to die in the wilderness, were found by a large, gray she-wolf. She nursed them, along with her newborn cubs, kept them clean and warm, and thought of them as her own, even though she knew what they were, and knew what they could do. In time, they were accepted by her pack, and trained to hunt and run through the woods. They both became strong in their own way, and despite being furless and clawless, could hunt as well as the next. Years later, the pack was found and killed off by men with Winchesters and Remingtons. The two boys were rescued from the wilds and brought back to civilization to be raised as humans. It wasn't long before the children forgot their lives in the woods and learned to walk upright on two legs. They went their separate ways, and soon forgot about each other as well. One wanted to live a peaceful life, but brutality and violence tainted his youth, confusing him and scarring his soul. He lost his human family, and after trying to kill himself, wandered on, lost in his human society. But the wolf milk in his stomach touched his dreams, and he was drawn to the woods, never realizing that this was where he came from. He only knew there was something deep within the trees and wilds that called to him, and some day he would answer. The other became a hunter and trapper, and sometimes a soldier, with a childhood just as violent, vulcanizing his soul and whetting his appetite for blood. Nobody knows what he thought when the wolf milk in his gut first touched his dreams and curdled, but one day he put down his rifle and picked up his bow and arrow and began hunting wolves. Maybe deep down inside he knew he was one of them, and he hated them for it, because he killed off whole packs, as though trying to erase his connection to them, but the wolf milk inside him would not go away. Years later, they both began searching for a mysterious giant wolf that closed traps and buried poisoned meat, trying to save its own kind from men. And as they walked through the woods, the one, using a walking stick, the other carrying bow and arrows, searching, neither one knew about the other. But the wolf milk was calling them home, and in the end, they would find what they were looking for. In the end, they would have to fight for what they believed in, and in the end, they would have to face each other, and face themselves.
