Once again the Author dons his black cap, grabs his cheese and onion sandwiches and along with his Jack Russell, sets out to walk through the wide and varied history of the Leeds area. From tales of Monks and Miners to Aviation pioneers and an African Prince, the past is brought to life in a serious and at times whimsical way by the Author and his plucky little Terrier. The Ancient Greeks were noted for several forms of tactical deception and they certainly invented smoke screens during the Peloponnesian War and later stories refer to the famous Trojan horse which allowed them to defeat Troy. Misinformation and visual deception were employed during World War I and came into even greater prominence during World War II with the Starfish sites employed by the British Government. As is often the case with a historical walk the germ of an idea was born upon reading about one such site just outside the village of Thorner." (Excerpt) "The woodland certainly emits a feeling of antiquity with the gnarled aged trees seemingly watching every step I made along the tarmac track. This seemingly innocent and unobtrusive track held a massive significance to the local coal mining endeavours of the 1750's and 1760's. The reason for this is it lies on the route of a wagonway which had wooden rails. This was used to transport coal downhill to the Middleton railway from where horses would haul the coal trucks into Leeds. Horses would also be used to bring the empty wagons back up the incline to once again be filled"
