The Flow Of The River

It was a nippy November day in the fall of 1967 and I could feel the chill in the air as I sat on the porch of our old farm house located near the Kentucky River not far from Frankfort, the capitol city of Kentucky. I often sat on the porch in my Mama's rocker where she held me and sang to me when I was a small child. I would look down the hill at that wide river and wonder where she might be. I would wonder why she left me. I would search that river with hopeful eyes and wish a rowboat would appear and bring her back to me and my Daddy. Some say she left in a rowboat to meet a lover. Others would say my Daddy took her in the rowboat and threw her over the side into the dark murky water late at night. Still others say she took that rowboat and threw herself into the water. There were rumors that she was depressed. Hell, there were all kinds of rumors about my Mama. One thing I knew for sure and that was that my Daddy loved my Mama and he would never have harmed a hair on her head. As I stared down at the river, a barrel floated to the water's edge with a woman's body inside.
